Set on a remote island off the Irish coast where a massacre once occurred, this entertaining if uneven mystery from Foley (The Hunting Party) opens just after the high-profile wedding of Will Slater, the star of the reality TV show Survive the Night, and Julia Keegan, an online magazine editor. The story, as it should, grabs more and more as you turn the pages. I've noticed Foley has the tendency to do this with her characters, which means you either love them or hate them by the end of the novel. A vain bride, even more vain groom and 150 drunk wedding guests on a remote Irish island.

It’s a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed. Red herrings are tossed in almost as afterthoughts. Lucy Foley has honed her unique brand of reverse-whodunit suspense down to a science—and thank goodness for that.". As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes.

The island and the ancient folly where the wedding party stays are themselves characters, adding to the feeling of almost supernatural mystery and the unease that something is lurking in the shadows and getting ready to strike. If I had to give any critique on this book it would be that I felt like the ending was all wrapped up rather quickly and I had a few more questions about how a few of the characters resolved their particular conflicts and moved forward, but other than that this was pure gold!!! I’m afraid to say more for fear of spoiling anything, but a great, smooth summer read. ... Set in such an isolated location, with a fairly small cast of characters, The Guest List feels a bit like a modern Agatha Christie novel.
VERDICT Only a handful of thriller writers can accomplish what Foley does here: weave a complex plot from the perspectives of eight characters plus an omniscient narrator without causing confusion or reader exhaustion when the plot bounces from one person to the next.

Well written whodunit told from multiple points of view, centered on a high profile wedding set at a remote island.
Personally, I think the book focused more on the characters themselves than the plot. A remote, atmospheric island, a wedding no one is particularly happy to be at, old secrets – and a murder. I never tried online dating, but what’s wrong with doing it using fake identities?

Foley defers disclosing the murder victim’s identity until quite late, but she undercuts the suspense with obvious indications of who it is. They all have secrets, and it only takes a few days of drinking games, isolation, and resentments to bring every murky feeling to the surface.
